There is always something unexplained and unexplainable about Ultima: She moves between two belief systems and two worlds Combines elements of indigenous (native) and European (Catholic) cultures Many examples of her magical powers – In chapters 10-12 we see her cure Lucas from a curse and stick pins into clay dolls to punish the witches

  3. Curanderas are: • Practitioners of the positive, unseen forces in the society of the southwest. • Rituals contain elements of the Catholic church such as blessings in the name of God or the saints and the use of the cross. • Though they can heal most illnesses, they are most often consulted to counteract the magic of negative forces, represented by the witches.

  4. Curanderas are: • Any long-term, more serious ailment or death which does not respond to traditional medicine or the help of the Catholic Church may be attributed to brujería and demands the attention of the curandera.

  5. Views of Ultima Are of Two Minds • On one hand, she is respected and people come to her for help. • On the other hand, people fear her powers and want to harm her when they think she’s a witch.

  6. The Golden Carp • A natural, pagan deity (god) compared to the Catholic God Antonio is used to worshipping. • A significant confrontation that Antonio must face – he questions whether other religions are equally valid forms of knowledge about moral issues. • Does the story of the Golden Carp and the other carp in the river sound familiar?

  7. Sighting of the Golden Carp The first sighting of the Golden Carp shows its awe-inspiring beauty and how Antonio is transfixed by its majestic power. It prompts him to raise doubts about his Christian faith. These doubts go hand-in-hand with the way in which the Catholic Church is not able to help the people that Ultima subsequently heals.
