  1. What IS an OUTLINE? Think of an outline as the SKELETON of your paper. You are putting together all of the bones in the right place so that you can add the meat of your paper on later.

  2. WHY Outline? Your outline is the way to PLAN your paper before you write. This way, you aren’t starting from a general idea and pouring all of your ideas out willy-nilly onto paper. ALWAYS outline. -- Even on tests – Jot down a simple outline in the margin.

  3. What does it look like? • Introduction • HOOK • TAG Statement • Thesis: While Romeo does not seem to change drastically throughout the play, his devotion to Juliet proves that he is stronger willed than Benvolio imagines in Act I. • Body Paragraph 1 • Topic Sentence: In Act One of the play, Romeo divulges his heartsickness to Benvolio, who quickly dismisses Romeo as foolish. • “Quote from Romeo” (I.I.60-62) • Analysis of this quotation • “Quote from Benvolio” • Analysis of this quotation • Concluding sentence with transition. • Body Paragraph 2 • Topic Sentence: By Act II of the play, Romeo fulfills part of Benvolio’s prediction by falling in love with Juliet. • Quote from Romeo about never loving ‘til this night. • … YOU WILL PUT IN YOUR ACTUAL QUOTES (OR PARAPHRASES) WITH PARANTHETICAL CITATIONS.
