  2. About the SSP • Founded in 1999 by Dr. Anna Barker and Dr. Margaret Foti • Hub for learning and sharing knowledge • Opportunity to build partnerships and change lives • Advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves

  3. SSP Mission & Goals for Advocates • Develop stronger backgrounds in cancer research • Present recent advances in drug development and basic, clinical and translational cancer research • Provide special lay-language lectures and small group discussions that assist in understanding scientific sessions at the annual meeting

  4. SSP Mission and Goals for Scientists • Develop a more personal understanding of cancer’s impact on patients, and their key concerns • Greater cognizance of the vital role that advocates play in supporting cancer research

  5. Survivors and patient advocates are encouraged to apply if they: • Actively support cancer research through policy advocacy, research advocacy and/or community outreach • Have a constituency with which to share knowledge gained through the program • Are able to participate in all components of the multiple-day program.

  6. Review of applications & acceptance criteria • Reviewed by committee of AACR members & staff who consider the following: • Level of experience in advocacy and knowledge of scientific research • Advocacy priorities • Organ-site focus • Past participation in the program • Location

  7. Application – available late October; due mid-December; notified mid-January2020 conference in San Francisco • Demographic information • Personal statement including advocacy experience, types & groups of affiliation, scientific training, and what you hope to learn/accomplish at the SSP and how you will share it • Poster title and abstract • Letter of recommendation

  8. Covered expenses • Annual meeting registration fee • Transportation • Lodging • Most meals • Ground transportation

Now what? • Day one is SSP only - Welcome, program overview and expectations, cancer “mini-med school”, working group introductions and breakout session, opening dinner, schedule prep • SSP Special interest sessions • Working group challenge question, meetings, and final presentation • Poster session • Networking receptions • Closing session
