  1. RAMADAN – FASTING & FATIGUE The Holy Month of Ramadan is nearing, during which time Muslims around the world fast and pray. Awareness of the affects of fasting is important for the person undertaking the fast and those working with colleagues who are fasting. Although the possible affects are relatively mild and rarely serious, they should be recognized to ensure a serious situation does not develop.

  2. Common affects of fasting • Headaches that usually last less than a day are common at • the start of the fast. • Insomnia usually occurs during the entire month of fasting. • Make sure you have sufficient rest the night before work. • Nausea and dehydration is also common. Drink a lot of • waterand eat nutritious food after breaking your fast. • Dizziness, lightheadedness and palpitations • (irregular and racing heartbeats) are possible • during fasting. Stop the task at hand and contact • your supervisor.

Possible affects of fasting… • Aching limbs and muscles - start your day with • gentle exercise but don’t exert yourself. • Reduction in concentration and alertness. • Blood glucose levels may decline. Glucose is • rapidly used for mental activity. • Blood pressure can decrease. The symptoms • are: weakness, tiredness, dizziness and lack • of energy. This tends to occur towards the • afternoon.

How can you help your fasting colleagues? • Be sensitive to their beliefs. • Employees who are fasting will find it difficult to handle • strenuous tasks; assigning lighter duties, more personnel and • allowing for frequent breaks will help. • Consider covering additional duties for fasting colleagues • and don’t be afraid to discuss an overload with your supervisor. • Make earlier provisions for your colleagues • and subordinates who are fasting during the month of Ramadan. • Respect the tradition and refrain from • from eating, drinking or smoking in public areas.

  5. Be courteous and think of the safety of your co-workers.
