  6. PPeer Helping Proof This morning, we had positive PROOF that our Peer Assistance Program WORKS and is a valuable activity in which our students engage!!!! I needed to make sure you both know about a situation that occurred and how it provided proof of the value of the Peer Assistance Program. Unfortunately, we had a situation this morning where a young child made a very poor decision about bringing a toy BB gun to school. The BB gun was handled by several kids on the bus. When the kids got off the bus, it was obvious they were scared and afraid. Upon investigation, we identified and isolated the involved students; handled the discipline side of the situation; and contacted parents.

While working with the involved kids, I received a call from Terri Borie at HHS informing me that one of her peer assistants, who was working in a classroom at TCES this morning, came back on campus and informed her that one of our children had told her about a possible gun on one of our buses. Terri immediately called me to make sure we were aware of the situation. Thankfully, we knew about it and were already contacting parents of involved students. When Teri called, it gave me chill bumps. First off, I was so glad that our kids felt comfortable enough with the peer assistant that they would share that type of information (this peer assistant has obviously established a positive relationship with the kids with whom she works). Second, it is impressive that the peer assistant heard the voices of the young children and returned to HHS and immediately went to her supervisor with this critically important information. Third, I so appreciate Ms. Borie taking the time to immediately give me a call to let me know about a potential safety threat on our campus.

  11. Selection….. Can just anyone be a Peer Helper? Selection of Peer Helpers is important!

  12. How do we match our Peer Helping students with the needs of our school and our feeder schools?

  13. We use a google form for teachers to make request. Peer Helping Request

  14. Once the request is made, we place peer helpers based on what we know about them and the need of the classroom teacher. Request spreadsheet

  15. Warning! Without proper training, you will NEVER be able to match your peer helpers and students needing help appropriately!
