Lorenzo is born with a defective gene, which he inherited from his mother. 4. The fats strip his nerve cells of their myelin “insulation” and they stop working normally. 5. He shows the symptoms of ALD, which usually ends in death.

  3. This diagram shows how the product, in this case long chain saturated fats, is broken down by an enzyme. Breaking molecules down is one common job of enzymes. Lorenzo is missing the enzyme that breaks down long chain saturated fat molecules, so they build up in his blood.
