  2. MedScholars Program Funds Research • Scholarly Concentration projects • Other research projects • (or both) • Projects in a variety of subject areas • lab, field, clinic, social sciences, humanities • Projects conducted at Stanford and abroad

  3. MS Project - defined 1 FTEQ project is normally carried out 100% in one quarter and totals 18 units.  OR • four quarters of 25% • two quarters of 25% + one quarter of 50% • one quarter of 25% + one quarter of 75% • two quarters of 50%

  4. Funding • Some changes from previous years • MedScholars covers tuition costs in quarters of full time research • After your first quarter of full time research, MedScholars can also cover some cost of living expenses in subsequent full time research quarters • In some cases, pro-rated support for less than full time research is possible

  5. Funding Structure ** Students receiving maximum need-based SU grant would loose $2,373 in SU Grant eligibility whereas SU grant and Med Scholars combined cannot exceed tuition.

  6. A Few Provisos and Addendums • MedScholars funds research projects • but not other things like community outreach, language learning, taking interesting classes, etc. • MedScholars funds your time • but not other things like staff or lab equipment • You can get up to 5 quarters of full-time support • Projects must be done with a Stanford faculty advisor • Projects at other U.S. universities are seldom funded

MedScholars Applications and Eligibility • Students apply for MedScholars awards • Usually a several-page application describing the project • Applications received quarterly • Projects reviewed by faculty • We endeavor to fund all meritorious applications • All Stanford MD students can apply • In the 1st year and in clerkships there can be some constraints

  11. Example During 1st Year: • Develop project during Autumn/Winter. Apply in January 2011 & receive approval for 1 FTEQ (100%) Traveling Scholars Project for Summer 10-11. • Receive funding equivalent to the cost of tuition in June 2011. • Work in lab abroad minimum 40 hrs/week for 7 weeks, then return to Stanford to compile data remainder of summer at minimum 40 hrs/week. During 2nd Year: • Develop larger project. Apply in April 2012 & receive 4 FTEQs of support at the following rate: 100% Summer 11-12, 100% Autumn 12-13, 100% Winter -12-13, 100% Spring 12-13. • Receive funding for tuition + some cost of living (June 2012, Sept. 2012, Jan. 2013, & April 2013.) • Hours in lab: minimum 40 hrs/week each quarter Summer/Autumn/Winter/Spring.
