Conservation – a shift in emphasis towards in situ & research The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland provides direct financial, logistical and practical support for projects around the world (including in Scotland, Uganda, Falklands, Rwanda, Brazil, Zambia, Bolivia…) Monday, is one of 30 local people employed by RZSS at the Budongo Conservation Field Station in Uganda. Photo: Florian Moellers Visiting research students study chimpanzees, other species and the forest with the help of the local field assistants.
Work on design for a new chimpanzee house at Edinburgh Zoo began in 2005 with the aim of creating a world class and innovative chimp habitat, breeding and research centre, education facility, and links to conservation of chimps in the wild.
Budongo Trail was opened on 4th March 2008 by HRH The Princess Royal and visited by Dr Jane Goodall on 20th May 2008.

BUDONGO TRAIL at the Zoo - A building designed to suit the needs of chimpanzees and visitors. The chimps have 3 indoor areas – and they choose where they want to be.

Outcomes in the first year: Winner of the BIAZA Best New Exhibit Award 2008. Winner of the BIAZA Best Education Project Award 2008. Greater awareness and understanding of conservation. Increased knowledge of chimpanzees. Greatly enhanced visitor experience & dwell time. Increased public support for RZSS conservation through donations and sales. Development of RZSS Edinburgh Zoo as a centre of excellence for primate research.
A centre of excellence and innovation for primates Living Links – primate research centre (opened May 08) - squirrel and capuchin monkeys. A Scottish Universities Research Centre. Enclosure 44 – Humans in the Zoo - an award winning Edinburgh Festival event – dancers in an enclosure at the Zoo for 3 weeks. Charles and Emma Darwin brought back to life as part of our Darwin 200 events
