Rules of the Game! • Eligibility Criteria Documenthas replaced the ‘ole NA Handbook • Each NAT document is organized according to the criteria • Build a three ring notebook
Nurse Aide I Training Healthcare Industry Requirements • Background Check? • Drug Screening? • Social Security Card? • Vaccinations? • Discipline Problem? • And the list goes on…..
There are two sides to every story • Education perspective • Industry perspective both have to look through the lens of law and policy
We are GUEST! • High school students and their teachers are guest in the healthcare facility where clinical is held • LEAs cannot overturn facility policies • LEAs cannot discriminate • Goal is to operate where industry and LEA circles overlap
Prevention is the Cure • Pre-Nurse Aide Training enrollment Counseling must include facts about: • Healthcare Industry Requirements • Requirements for completion of Nurse Aide training • NNAAP eligibility routes • NC Nurse Aide I Registry
Healthcare Industry • TB Skin test • Vaccinations • Negative Drug Screen • Negative Background Check • Others… must be cleared by HR of the healthcare facilities…interpreted differently by some healthcare facilities
Completion of NA Training • Final Grade of 75 in the course • Mastery of all curriculum skills • 40 hour clinical • Demonstration of a subset of skills in the healthcare facility and verification same • Can pass class and NOT complete training
NNAAP eligibility routes • Can take NNAAP with or without completion of NAT • Must have Valid SS card and Valid Drivers License or DMV Identification to register for the exam
FYI… Most healthcare industry facilities and most post secondary allied health programs require both 1) certification of completion of NAT and 2) a listing on the NAI registry Students and parents need to be aware!
NC Nurse Aide I Registry • High school students are NOT exempt from allegations of resident abuse, resident neglect, misappropriation of property from a resident or facility. • Being listed on the National Practitioners Database (bad list) will not go away.
What should LEAs do? • Determine policies and procedures that address all the issues • Use BON method when dealing with a “conviction” • LEA Human Resource should take leadership in the drug screening process
What should LEAs do? • Teachers must not be perceived as imposing nonacademic requirements on students.
What should LEA do? • Do drug screen and background check as early as possible keeping healthcare time restrictions in mind. • Do it early • Do it early • Do it early • Do it eary
