J-POSTL: Challenges and Opportunities for Pre-service Teacher Education Akiko Takagi ECML, Februaty 17, 2014
Aims of pre-service teacher version of J-POSTL • to facilitate the professional growth of student teachers • to support and promote the autonomous growth of student teachers.
Differences from the original document • Scale used for self-assessment • Descriptors marked by didactic competence stages • Personal Statement and Dossier • Glossary of terms
Scale used for self-assessment • Student teachers and teacher educators feel that the open-arrowed bar is too ambiguous. • No intention to quantify didactic competences.
Descriptors marked by didactic competence stages • Differences in didactic competence among descriptors (pre-service and novice) • Out of 96 descriptors, 65 are for pre-service teachers, and 31 are for novice teachers based on the survey on assessing the appropriateness of the descriptors. • Descriptors for novice teachers are included to show competences necessary in the near future.
Personal Statement and Dossier • Similar, but simplified slightly to encourage pre-service teachers to use the sections effectively.
Future challenges • to collect concrete cases of portfolio implementation that both teacher trainers and students can utilize within each university’s existing curriculum. • to conduct more classroom-based research using an open-ended questionnaire and interview to investigate how to use the portfolio more effectively as well as the effects of using the portfolio.
