  2. What is GPS? • It is a satellite system which detects or receive GPS signals from electronics • Usually use for communication or make map • It can also be used for weather check or tracking GPS users • Advantages • Can be used for emergency calls • Can give signals to rescuers when there is trouble while traveling to other countries by boat or airplane (MIA) • Could be helpful for chasing crimes • Disadvantage • Not very accurate or gives wrong information • It tracks every GPS signals in the electronics like Cell Phones

  3. Artical 1 (Police charge man with murder after reviewing GPS data) • A man who ran over a 12 year-old baby sister and was tracked by a GPS which was installed by his suspicious wife • He purposely crashed her and ran away, leaving the body behind • The police recorded where he went and it shows that he had spent more than 3 hours of driving around the road • His wife had installed the GPS few days earlier because she suspected him of having an affair • He didn’t use his cell phone to call for help Source : The Sydney Morning Herald, 2007, “Police charge man with murder after reviewing GPS data” last viewed on Sept. 19, 2007. <http://www.smh.com.au/news/technology/police-charge-man-with-murder-after-reviewing-gps-data/2007/08/21/1187462233375.html>

  4. Artical 2 (Relatives of miners wait and hope as rescuers inch forward) • 6 miners are trapped in 1,500 feet underground in Utah mine • GPS signal was detected beneath the ground • Since there is no road, a helicopter was sent • guiding by the GPS data, the helicopter dropped the drill into position where the 6 miners are trapped • Some people argued that it is inaccurate • No one was saved because it was too late Source : CNN News, 2007, “Relatives of miners wait and hope as rescuers inch forward”, CNN News, last viewed Sept. 19 2007. <http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/08/utah.mine/index.html?eref=rss_topstories>

  5. Social & Ethical Issues • Privacy Issues • the GPS signals can track you everywhere only if you take GPS electronics or Cell Phones • it can be tracked when your pet is lost • it can help the police to chase crime easier • police or officials usually look at the GPS signals, so they are watching or tracking a lot of people • Inaccurate / Reliability Issues • sometimes the satellite signals will make a mistake • the GPS gives the right path, but doesn’t mean it is the fastest way to go

  6. Questions • Will the government give us privacy if they don’t keep on tracking the GPS signals in the future? • Should the GPS be installed in cars? • Would you still use or bring your cell phone, since the government is watching or tracking you? • Is it reliable? • If you are one of the officials, what will you do when you control the satellite or how will you use it? • Is it better off giving the GPS signals to the police instead of government? • Is it possible to leave the GPS alone and let it just do its job just like the internet without the censorship? • Any Questions?
