DEMOPOLIS Demopolis is located at the confluence of the Tombigbee and Black Warrior Rivers, just 212 miles north of the Port of Mobile. Demopolis also lies at the intersection of Hwy 80, a major east-west corridor, and Hwy 43 which runs north to south. LINDEN
Demopolis is famous for its white chalk bluffs along the river. The French Vine & Olive Company was drawn to the area because of the bluffs, but the soil was not suited to grow grapes and olives.
Bluff Hall Lyon Hall Demopolis has three antebellum house museums. Bluff Hall and Lyon are thought to be the inspiration for Lionet in Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes. Gaineswood is one of the nation’s best examples of Greek Revival architecture. Gaineswood
The Demopolis City School System includes 4 campuses with a total enrollment of about 1500 students. The Demopolis Tigers were Division 4 State Champions in football last year.
Beautification ProjectsHistoric Downtown Business District Planter Boxes The City of Demopolis has recently invested in new plantings downtown as well as on Highway 80 under the supervision of our horticulturist.
Demopolis has two industrial parks. The picture at left shows the spec building at the Airport Industrial Park. Below is Rock-Tenn which produces paperboard used in food packaging. Rock-Tenn employs about 460 people.
Demopolis Yacht Basin Demopolis is situated at the southern end of the 234 mile long Tennessee Tombigbee Water System and is considered the “gateway” to the system from Mobile. Barge traffic of coal, chemicals, petroleum, and agricultural products moves past pushed by tugboats that salute residents with their horns in passing.
Demopolis hosts Christmas on the River, a week long festival that culminates with the Children’s Day parade and a night-time Nautical Parade where the floats really float!
Linden Lumber Company, located 20 minutes south of Demopolis, is Marengo County’s largest employer at 550 employees. Linden Lumber produces hardwood flooring.
The amount of timberland and the nearby waterway also support a large outdoor sportsman population. Catfish, bream, and bass fishing; turkey, deer, rabbit, raccoon, squirrel, and dove hunting are enjoyed by all ages.
