DC HIV/AIDS Snapshot Late testing, faster progression of the disease and missed opportunities for prevention and treatment. Women are a growing proportion of the District's epidemic. Black community hardest hit by the disease. Heterosexual contact leads new transmissions. HIV/AIDS Risk Factors Indicators: • They measure risk when (other) direct measures are not available. For example: • +++ STDs jkarianjah@brynmawr.edu
Women and HIV/AIDS • 120,000 - 160,000 women in USA have HIV/AIDS • One in 4 does not know it yet. • Women can pass HIV/AIDS to their babies. • MTCT is most common way that children become infected with HIV/AIDS. • This transmission is wholly preventable. jkarianjah@brynmawr.edu
Mother-Child TransmissionPrevention 1 in 4 of pregnant women with HIV transmit. ARV can reduce risk from 25% to 2% Can be prevented through: Regular testing of pregnant women through the pregnancy Provide ARV before birth and after birth jkarianjah@brynmawr.edu
DC Mother-Child Transmission The District accounts for 6% of all MCT in US in last 5 years between 2001-2006, DC had 56 children aged 13 or younger diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. Many states had no new reported cases during this same time period. Not all women who have HIV will give it to their children. jkarianjah@brynmawr.edu
