Regions • Formal Region = grouping of places based on a shared characteristic that all places have in common • Characteristic could be climate, agriculture, language, religion, government, economics, bylaws • Well defined, easy to recognize
Regions • Examples of Formal Regions – • State of Tennessee • English Speaking Countries • European Union Countries • Southeastern Conference (SEC) Football • Tropical Climate Region • Wheat Belt
Regions • Functional Region – regions with a central point (node) that branches out from there to reach people near by, serving a function • Function could be business, government, etc • Strongest presence in the center • Weakest presence on the outer layers
Regions • Examples of Functional Regions: • Commercial Appeal newspaper coverage base • “Memphis” metro area (City of Memphis, surrounding counties) • Pizza delivery route • TV stations • Bus routes • School districts
Regions • Vernacular Regions: grouping of places based on perception of an individual • “Fuzzy” regions because not well defined • Based on stereotypes, ideas and beliefs of individuals
