Motivating Students to Learn Actively Before/After Class In your group • Share the ‘reasons’ that you have put down • Brainstorm methods to motivate students to learn actively before/after class
Case Sharing – Joanne Our problems and difficulties: • Limited time in lectures and practical sessions • Students also need time to familiarise different techniques before they can handle well to express their creative design to a real product. • Students are too passive. • Students’ design - no sharing, no comments from other students Less motivation
Case Sharing – Joanne Project Title: Learner-Centred Approach in Textile Design Objectives: • is to shift the pedagogy from a teacher-centred to a learner-centred paradigm. • to enhance the conceptual and creative capability of the students by means of creative design-based projects. Team members: Dr. Joanne Yip, Dr. Kinor Jiang, Dr. Kit Yick (490S)
Case Sharing – Joanne Textile Design teaching materials in WebCT
Case Sharing – Joanne • Methodology: • Before Practical Class: • One week before: we ask students to read teaching materials posted in WebCT. • Powerpoints and videos explaining different design techniques.
Case Sharing – Joanne • Methodology: • After Practical Class: • Students should upload their design to “Design Gallery”. • Other students can review their classmates’ designs and give rating and comment. • Lecturer can mark students’ design from the Gallery
e.g.: Student - Miss Lau put her “Theme”, “Inspiration”, “Tools”, “Procedures” and “Result” in her own design work.
Students comments “ We can review other students’ design in the design gallery, this motivated me to do my best in my design. I don’t want to get low rating in there!”– quoted from Breveda Lo, May 07. “ Although uploading the file of my design is a little bit complicated, I enjoy the result when other people comment on my work!”– quoted from Cathy Chan, May 07. “ The web-based user guidebook is clear and simple to follow”. – quoted form Fiona Chan, Mar. 08.
