The ginkgo biloba tree has medium green leaves that grow up to 3 inches long, according to the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at Ohio State University. In the fall, the leaves usually turn chartreuse in color, although some leaves turn golden yellow with excellent growth conditions. This tree produces an oval fruit that appears tan-orange in color and green flowers that have a pleasant fragrance. The bark of the trunk ranges from light brown to brownish-gray, and the trunk may grow up to 3 feet in diameter. The ginkgo biloba tree has stout twigs that appear gray, tan or light brown in color.
Active ingredients in ginkgo leaves include flavonol glycosides and terpene trilactones, principally the diterpene ginkgolides A, B, C and J, and the sesquiterpene bilobalide, along with smaller amounts of biflavones, proanthocyanidins, and organic acids.
