Bob Kahn • born December 23, 1938 • is an American Internet pioneer, engineer, and computer scientist • born in Brooklyn, New York City
Vint Cerf • born June 23, 1943 • is an American computer scientist • born in New Haven, Connecticut
Bob Kahn & Vint Cerf • They are both recognized as fathers of the internet. • Their partnership that drove the creation of the TCP/IP protocol as one of the core components of the Internet. • But it wasn't until 1973 that when Kahn, who as then working for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency , rejoined his UCLA colleague to create the TCP/IP protocol.
TCP/IP protocol • The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP), were the first networking protocols defined in this standard as a set of communication protocols • TCP/IP provides end-to-end connectivity specifying how data should be formatted, addressed, transmitted, routed and received at the destination.
TCP/IP Functionality • Its organized into 4 different layers • Link Layer (lowest) it contains communication technologies for a single network segment • Internet layer it connects independent networks • Transport layer it handles process-to-process communication • Application layer (highest) which interfaces to the user and provides support services.
