  7. Brief History of Biomedical Initiative • Established in April 2003 by Interim VPR • An extension of the Health Science Research Enhancement Effort (Report - Fall 02) • Includes five health science units plus COSM, Liberal Arts, and Engineering, Palmetto Health, Dorn VAMC

Committee Objectives • Study current biomedical researchactivities and identify areas of existing strength. • Recommend a 5-year goal for increased extramural funding of biomedical research. • Recommend investments and other actions. • Establish a procedure for ongoing provision of faculty input to the University administration.

Specific Strategies • Identify specific areas of biomedical research which should be targeted for investments. • Identify new or modified administrative policies and procedures that would support enhanced biomedical research. • Identify infrastructure improvements that would support enhanced biomedical research.

  13. BRISC Internal Funding Program • $1 M - available in FY 04 (4 or more awards up to $250,000 each) • Awards - intended to increase USC’s biomedical research by supporting the development of competitive applications for federally funded program project (PO1) or center-level research grants
