11th South European Forwarders and Logistics Providers Congress “SOUTHEAST EUROPEAN INTERMODALITY”Athens, Greece, May 16-17, 2013 Rail Market Development: Co-Modal Platforms – Freight Forwarders’ Tool for Single Wagon Load Dr. Ivan Petrov
Liberalization of Railways in Europe – political aspect • Recast • 4th Railway Package • TEN-T Corridors • Single European Rail Market
Practical Results on the main market • Liberalization compared to air transport has not been reached • Single wagons which were the break bone of the FF activity are dead • Concentration of market into up to 3 RU’s in Europe • Cherry-picking aspect of the new private operators
PERSPECTIVES • Only hope to reverse negative trend: • Further deregulation (open access) • New business models – XRail • New industrial and commercial organization (wagon groups, block trains)
PERSPECTIVES • Corridors thinking and establishment of rail hubs • Co-modal and tri-modal solution • Intermodal services • Mixed trains • Political support for the considerable investment
STANDART REQUIREMENTS FOR RAILHUBS • Good location on rail corridors. • Regular service by the partner railway. • Ensuring the bundling and release of complete trains. • Minimum 150 meters of track directly at warehouses until 750 meters maximum longitude of train.
STANDART REQUIREMENTS FOR RAILHUBS • Warehouses of at least 5000m2 • Covered ramp for direct transshipment wagon / truck (cross-docking). • Handling / storage of intermodal equipment. • Priority on cross-docking operating hubs than on heavy logistics hubs.
