  2. Network Directors’ Responsibilities Research Administrative Review • Foster an institutional culture that supports the ethical conduct of research throughout the network

  3. Network Directors’ Responsibilities Research Administrative Review • Ensure adequate support for local research programs including, but not limited to: • Resources • Staff • Equipment • Infrastructure

  4. Network Directors’ Responsibilities Research Administrative Review • Ensure local facilities’ compliance with all VA and other Federal requirements for the conduct of research including, but not limited to: • Protection of human subjects • Animal welfare • Information security

  5. Models of Network Involvement in Research • Research Product Line • Network Research Group • Network Research Officer • Combination of the above

Research Product Line • Advantages • Formal mechanism to ensure research activities are recognized as a network priority • Uniformity in research practices throughout the network • Implementation • Designate VISN-level individual to lead effort • Bring ACOS/R&D together regularly

Examples of Successful Network Involvement in Research • Stimulating productive relationships between clinical and research services • Creating network projects (e.g., chronic disease) • Encouraging Centers of Excellence to look for research opportunities • Providing resources that benefit both clinical & research services (e.g., for recruitment of clinical investigators)
