  4. Age Estimation Methods Using Anthropological Parameters on Human Teeth Hrvoje Brkić

  5. Dental Age • Clinical dental works • Identification process • Archaeological investigation • Case of living people (imigrants)

  6. Weld C. Athropies. In: The pathology of the teeth with special references to their anatomy and physiology. Philadelphia: Linsay & Blakiston, 1872: 232-70.

  7. Estimation in children Estimation in adults Dental age • Atlas aproach • Morphological • technique • Scoring system • Radiological technique

  8. Gustafson, G., 1947 Originally without T Age = 11.43 + 4.56 * (A + S + P + C + R + T), R = 0.98

  9. By Gustafson • Attrition • Secondary dentine • Periodontal recession • Apical transparency • Cementum apposition • Root resorption

  10. Gustafson G, 1950

  11. Johanson, G., 1971 Age = 11.02 + 5.14 * A + 2.30 * S + 4.14 * P + 3.71 * C + 5.57 * R + 8.98 * T r = 0.92

  13. Zavod za sudsku medicinu i kriminalistiku

  14. 1991 War in Croatia14 000 missing people • Dental Identification • Dental Age Assessment • DNA Analysis

  15. The purpose of the study

  16. Material & Methods • 160 Caucasian permanent teeth; • From 14 to 80 years old (average age 45.5); • Method 1 - Bang and Ramm (1970); • Method 2 – Kvaal & Solheim (1994); • Method 3 - Johanson (1971);

  17. Method 1

  18. Method 2

  19. Method 3

  20. STATISTICS Data of known and estimated age were presented by the median values and 10th and 90th percentile range, and compared using Pearson’s correlation coefficients and regression analysis. Statistical calculations were done using MedCalc Software (ver. 8), Mariakerke, Belgium.

  21. RESULTS Brkic H, Milicevic M, Petrovecki M. Age estimation method using anthropological parameters on human teeth. Forensic Sci Int.2006;162:13-16.

  22. The number and sex of samples

  23. Correlation coefficients between known age and all three Methods

  24. Regression lines with 95% confidence and prediction interval limits

  25. Correlation coefficients between known age and all three Methods using mandibulary teeth

  26. Correlation coefficients between known age and all three Methods using maxillary teeth

  27. Correlation coefficients between known age and all three Methods using one root teeth

  28. Correlation coefficients between known age and all three Methods using two roots teeth

  29. Correlation coefficients between known age and all three Methods by sex (male)

  30. Correlation coefficients between known age and all three Methods by sex (female)

  31. Conclusion • All of the three methods used showed high correlation with the estimated age; • The highest coefficient of correlation was marked at the Method 3; • Coefficient of correlation was higher at females; • Two roots teeth showed higher coefficient of correlation;

  32. AGE= 39.95+/-2.25 + 0.22+/-0.05 x Method 1 • AGE=23.17+/-3.69 + 0.57+/-0.08 x Method 2 • AGE=11.73+/-1.68 + 0.75+/-0.04 x Method 3
