Photographs & Themes An essay on The Great Gatsby
Directions • Choose a photograph that seems to you to embody some important element of The Great Gatsby. • You may use one of the photographs supplied here, or you may select another photograph of your choice from any source (you just need to be able to provide a copy of the photograph in your paper). • Write an essay in which you do BOTH of the following: establish that the important element you claim for the novel IS indeed an important claim, AND establish why you think that the photograph demonstrates that element.
Directions, Continued! • The paper must be between 1000 and 1500 words (but remember shorter is almost always a sign of lack of sufficient development or example!) • The paper must be typed, double-spaced, and submitted to turnitin.com • The rough draft is due Friday, 3/2/07
Further Directions! • Do NOT select any photograph that represents a literal, factual, or plot-based element. You are looking for theme, style, characterization, function of setting, function of narrative, etc.! • With your rough draft, please provide a short explanation (separately) of why you chose the first sentence that you chose. • You may wish to bring or send me your thesis for feedback before you launch full-scale into the essay!
…or you can choose another! • http://www.nationalgeographic.com • http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsowhome.html • http://photos.si.edu/ • And many others!
