Teacher Education • Teacher education is spread over six faculties. • The faculties are responsible for the development of the course descriptions, aims, contents, relevant literature, teaching and assessment methods • The courses should be closely connected to the teacher profession and interplay between practical work and theory and between the subjects

The Management and Organisation of Teacher Education • The Dean of teacher education is the professional and administrative head of the different teacher educations. • Each education has a programme coordinator. • The Dean and the programme coordinators form the academic administration, which has the responsibility for the courses and programmes, which are taken by over 1,600 students.

Samlet plan(Plan complet de formation) • AUC publishes Samlet plan for each year of teacher education, pre-school teacher education, teacher-training programme and specialist teacher education in practical and aesthetic subjects. • Samlet plan contains each local course description connected to the compulsory parts of the education, including the plan for teaching practice and guidelines. • Samlet plan makes the cooperation connected to the studies easier for both students, tutors, lecturers, schools/pre-schools and the academic administration

  14. Teacher Education for the Pre-school (the 0-6 age group) Teacher education for the Norwegian pre-school (the 0-6 age group) is the three-year programme (bachelor) consisting of • a basic programme of basic programme of five semesters, and then • a one semester elective course.

  15. Teacher education for the Norwegian grunnskole (the 6-16 age group) Teacher education for the Norwegian grunnskole (the 6-16 age group) is a four-year programme consisting of • a basic programme of six semesters, and then • either a one-year course or two one-semester courses.

Teacher Training Programme for Students with General Teacher Background • The goal is to qualify students to teach in compulsory lower secondary school, upper secondary school and adult education. • Focuses on the practical work experience and has the teacher's field of work within the current curriculum for compulsory education. • Covers the subject-centred education (ICT, mathematics, science, etc.) and professional didactics and practice. • The programme can be completed either in one year, full-time or over two years, part-time. • Admission requirements: Qualification for a general subject teacher general a lower university degree (bachelor)

Teacher Education:Training of Pre-Primary and Primary School Teachers • The minimum qualification to teach in pre-primary schools (førskole) is a Førskolelærer qualification which requires three (3) yearsof training at colleges of education. • The minimum qualification to teach in primary schools (grunnskole, barnetrinnet) is an Allmennlærer(general subject teacher) or Faglærer (single subject teacher) qualification which requires four (4) years of training offered at colleges of education.

Teacher Education:Training of Secondary School Teachers • Allmennlærer, Faglærer or a lower university degree (bachelor), based on 4 years' study, qualifies to teach in lower secondary schools. • Allmennlærer with one year of additional subjects (one subject must have been studied for at least one year), a higher university degree requiring five to six years of study (master) qualifies to teach in upper secondary schools.

Stages of studies:University Level Studies University level first stage: Cand.mag, Bachelor: • Candidatus/Candidata Magisterii (Cand.mag.) is normally obtained after three-and-a-half years University level second stage: Candidatus/Candidata Master • The second level (graduate/higher) degree usually consists of one-and-a-half to two years' additional study and University level third stage: Doctoral • Doctor's degree programmes generally consist of three years of study following completion of the second level degree or other professional degree programmes

  29. University Level Third Stage: Doctoral • The title of Doctor (Dr.) is followed by the name of the field of study in which it is awarded, e.g. • Dr. scient. (Natural Sciences), • Dr. art. (Humanities), • Dr. polit. (Social Sciences), • Dr. ing. (Engineering), • Dr. juris (Law), • Dr. med. (Medicine), • Dr. odont. (Dentistry), • Dr. oecon. (Economy), • Dr. psychol. (Psychology) and • Dr. theol. (Theology). • The title Doctor Philosophiae is more general and can be obtained in all fields without a specific course of study. Doctor's Degree programmes are offered by the universities, most university colleges, some State colleges and a few private institutions. • The 2001 reform has created the PhD which consists in three years of study beyond the Master's Degree.

  30. Admissions to Higher Education • Admission to university-level studies • Name of secondary school credential required: Vitnemål fra Videregående Skole • Minimum score/requirement: Completed and Passed ("Fullført og bestått")

  31. Foreign Students Admission Admission requirements: • Foreign students should have qualifications at least equivalent to completed general education at the upper secondary level. Minimum mark: 3.0 • Norwegian for foreigners (Norsk for utlendinger, trinn 3) Minimum mark: 500 (oral and written) / Bergenstesten, høyere nivå Language requirements: • Students should have good knowledge of Norwegian and English.

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) • Developed by the Commission of the European Union in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition of studies abroad. • Provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements, and transferring them from one institution to another. 

  36. ECTS Credits • Credits are allocated to course units to describe the student workload required to complete the programme. • Credits reflect the quantity of work each course requires in relation to the total quantity of work required to complete a full year of academic work. • 60 ECTS credits represent the full workload of an academic year, and 30 ECTS credits a semester. • One (1) Norwegian "vekttall" (credit point) is equivalent to three (3) ECTS credits.

Curriculum for Primary and Lower Secondary Education: L 97 The curriculum consists of three main parts: • The core curriculum for compulsory, upper secondary and adult education (general part) - became effective from September 1993 • Principles and guidelines for compulsory education - is the bridge between the core curriculum and the subject syllabuses. • Subject syllabuses - are based on the core curriculum and formulated in accordance with the principles and guidelines for compulsory education Separate curriculum, L97 Sami, for the Sami pupils in order to preserve and develop the Sami language and Sami culture and social life.

  41. The School Structure Compulsory education is divided into three stages: • Primary stage: grades 1–4 (age 6–10) • Intermediate stage: grades 5–7 (age 10–13) • Lower secondary stage: grades 8–10 (age 13–16)

  42. Language Requirements Different languages • bokmåland nynorsk, sami, and sign Language for deaf pupils. Foreign language teaching • English is now taught from grade 1 and continues throughout compulsory schooling. • German or French are offered from grade 8.
