Ecology Lesson 4 What are the types of interactions that occur in an ecosystem?
DO NOWCan you find the butterflies? • BY YOURSELF AND IN YOUR SEAT, • Look around the room and see if you can find the butterflies. • Write on your paper its location. Over time, do you think the population size of butterflies that blend in with their surroundings would increase or decease?
Essential Question What are the types of interactions that occur in an ecosystem?
Predator or prey? 1. wolf and rabbit 2. frogs and insects 3. wolf and moose 4. hawk and snake 5. mongoose and cobra
Do Now • Turn to page 24. • Read pages 24-31 silently.
Assignment • Read pages 24-31. • Complete the graphic organizer. • There are three major types of interactions among organism; competition, predation, and symbiosis
Summarization Activity • Give 1 example of a predator/ prey relationship.
Do Now • List 5 different animals. • Get with a partner. • Match predator/ prey relationships.
Competition • Many organisms compete for food, water, shelter, mates • It is a struggle between organisms to survive with the same limited resources
Predation • The interaction where one organism kills an other for food. • Predator- one that does the killing • Prey- one that is eaten • If an increase in predators, what will happen? • Prey population will decrease- lower food supply will cause the predator population to decrease
Predator and Prey Adaptations • Predators- help kill prey, speed, tentacles, eyesight, hearing, poisonous 2. Prey- avoid being killed * mimicry- looking like something else that is dangerous * false coloring- looks like something bigger * protective covering- porcupine * camouflage- chameleon, walking leaf insect * warning colors- certain colors often are warning of poison.
Symbiosis 1. Mutualism-Both species benefit 2. Commensalism- one species benefits • Parasitism-one benefits the other is harmed • Parasite- the organism that benefits • Host- the organism it lives on
Analyzing Interaction Among Organisms • Turn to handout 65 in your packet. • ..\..\Ecology\ecology\69.doc
Assignment • Read the summary handout 69. • Answer the essential question in your packet. What are the types of interactions that occur in an ecosystem?
Ticket Out the Door Name and describe the types of interactions that occur in an ecosystem.
