Background • Grew up in southern Texas. • As a young girl she was inspired by the two geography textbooks her father read to her. • She used college as an escape away from her small town.
Education Background • She attended Texas Women’s University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry. • In 1972 she graduated from Rutger’s University in New Jersey with a Ph.D. in cell biology.
Elma as an Educator • She has taught at UCLA for over 30 years. • She is also the director of UCLA’s Minority Access to Research Careers program. • In 2005 she received the Academic Senate’s distinguished Teaching Award for mentoring undergraduates in research.
