Part I: Research Paper No. of Pages 1 4 - to – 5 2 – to – 4 1 Total Pages 8 – to - 11 • Title Page • Body of Research Paper • Appendix • Three (3) images of artist’s work • One (1) image of the artist • Bibliography (The following is the minimum) • Two (2) books • One scholarly article – this can be obtained online by from a reliable and academic source

Paper: Biographical Research • Biographical Information • Name • Citizenship(s), significant travel (if important) • Date of birth, place of birth, parental/family information (if relevant), place of death, date of death • Primary form and type of expression (2-D, 3-D, performing, new technologies, etc) • Primary medium(s) • Any style or movement the artist is associated with • Explanation of that style or movement • Use an example of another artist working at the same time as your artist as a comparison to your artist

  5. Paper:Critique • Choose one or two of the artist’s works and then critique the work based on the following: • What is the content of the art? • What is the genre? (the kind of art, i.e. painting: still life, portrait, landscape, representational, non-representational, etc). • Address the style or movement in the art itself, i.e. how does it represent that style or movement? • Analyze the work on its formal qualities (elements & principles of art). • Discuss your interpretations of the art.

Paper:Formatting • 12 point font size; Arial or Times/Times Roman font • Double-space the body of the paper, please single-space the Title Page and Bibliography, as well as the information located under images.* • Number the pages on the lower right hand corner of the paper * • Under each image, provide the following information: • “Title of Artwork”, (Year), size, medium • Where is the artwork located today – if unknown, state: “Location unknown and cite where you got that information” *This is not following MLA formatting but this is the only deviation I will allow

  10. Part II: Oral Presentation • Your oral presentation is based directly off of your paper. You are presenting your research to the class. • Your presentation will be timed. It may not be less than five minutes nor may it be longer than eight minutes. Practicing your presentation will be important. • Plan on creating a presentation that you use to speak from – NOT – read from. In general, 1-2 slides per minute of presentation. • I would recommend that you follow the organization of your paper.

Presentation:Do’s & Don’t’s • Please adhere to the following advice: • Do not add obnoxious transitions or animations or sounds that distract from your message • Do not read from your slides – think about simple sentences to remind you of the points you want to make. • Don’t wait until the last minute to practice the timing or your presentation • Dress appropriately • Make eye contact • Speak clearly and pace yourself

  14. Students Evaluations/Testing • Your fellow students will be evaluating your performance. • They will receive a grade for their participation. • The information from your research presentations will be used to in the making of your final exam. • More information about this will be provided.
