  2. The End Result At the end of this unit, you will use your knowledge of set design to: • Create a floor plan and design a set • Use given & found materials to create a MODEL of a set. • Be able to take a quiz on this material

  3. 1. Setting The location where the play takes place. The set is the display of this onstage Settings can changefrom scene to scene within a play.

  4. Representation of an item, such as a set, showing what you want the item to look like. • For our purposes, it will be a flat drawing 2. Rendering

  6. 3. Set Props An object (or a big thing like a tree or table) that is part of a set or something that provides decoration to the set.

  7. 4. Floor Plan A birds-eye view drawing of the set.It shows where things are . Designers make a floor plan before they build a set. The floor plan helps them see the size and placement of the background and set props.

  8. 5. Flats Flat pieces of theatrical scenery which are painted and positioned on stage to give the appearance of buildings, walls, or other backgrounds

  9. 6. Unit set Single set which can represent a variety of locations with the simple addition of properties or scenic elements.

  10. 7. UIL Unit Set The unit set approved for competition use by the University Interscholastic League

  11. 8. Tri-fold flats Three smaller flats joined at two places by hinges to “unfold” into three sections.

  12. 9. Bi-fold flats Two flats joined together by a hinge to “unfold” into two sections.

  13. 10. Step Units Moveable steps or stairs that vary in width. The UIL unit set includes 2’ and 4’ wide step units.

  14. 11. Pylons Narrow set pieces that resemble pillars UIL unit set uses 4’, 6’, and 8’ pylons.

  15. 12. Platforms A raised horizontal surface. UIL unit set includes 4’ x 4’ 4’ x 8’ 1’ x 1’ (resemble blocks (or small cubes)

  16. 13. Ramps An inclined surface. UIL ramps are 4’ x 4’ and incline from the floor level to 1’ above.
