Why? • Since 1980’s Columbian Drug Lords have used Mexico as trade route • Spike in killings connected to arrest of Osiel Cardenas • Corruption in local police, lack of fed support • Murder rates double between 2005-2010
Progress • Drug- cartel related deaths decrease • Many leading mafiosi have been captured and killed. 12 out of 37 kingpins remain at large. • Mexico spends 5 billion pesos on security and social development • Drop in murders • There are more jobs, keeping people out of gangs. • They replaced the old written justice system and brought in oral trials, making trials faster
