Stress • Stress-induced disease (psychosomatic illness) • Excess stress = excess adrenergic activity which produces the following effects: • C-V system: • Hypertension • Tachycardia • G-I system • Hyperacidity with or without peptic ulcer disease • IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) • Spastic colitis • Immune system • Large amounts of steroids (glucocorticoids) released during stress • They decrease effect of inflammatory defense response • These patients at increased risk for infections & cancer
