Process of developing and assessing literacy materials contd.
Challenges facing the development and assessment of literacy materials • Difficulty of writers to interpret the curriculum. • Failure to use appropriate professionals to develop the required materials. • Failure to edit materials that are to be used in schools to support the curriculum. • Sell of pamphlets and other sub-standard materials on the market which often find their way to the schools. • Failure of publishers to pay authors for the work done which discourages Ugandans from writing materials for use in schools. • Insufficient funding which limits the number of publications that we can have in schools. • Reluctance by some publishers/authors to effect corrections in their manuscripts as requested.
Way forward • Development of a country will be developed through developing reading skills at an early stage. • Development of literacy materials should be the concern of every Ugandan • Publishers should engage professional editors for quality materials
