  1. Algebra I & Biology Performance Event Scoring Workshop Presenters: Julie Antill & Joyce Penland Date: April 16, 2009

  2. Objectives • To learn to score a performance event using anchor papers and training materials • To learn about the test specifications

  3. End-of-Course Exams:The latest . . .

  4. When will students take EOC exams? • A student should take an EOC exam when he/she completes instruction on the corresponding CLEs. If CLEs are distributed across courses that are organized in a two-year format (Algebra IA and Algebra IB, for example), students will take the exam at the end of the second year.

  5. What about 8th grade students in Algebra I? Do they take the MAP too? • 8th grade students should take the test if they are going to receive credit and they will not have to take Algebra I at the high school level. Additionally, they are required by NCLB to participate in the 8th grade MAP test as well.

  6. If a student will not receive credit for a course and he/she will receive additional instruction in the course content, is he/she required to take the EOC exam? • No. The district may opt to administer the EOC exam to the student after he/she completes extended instruction in the content of the CLEs being assessed.

  7. Which graduating class will be the first class in which all of the students will be required to have taken 1 EOC exam? What about 2 EOC exams? • Beginning with the 2008-09 school year, all students completing course content for which there is an EOC exam should take the EOC exam. Beginning with the class of 2011 (sophomores in 2008-09), districts must ensure that all students complete EOC exams in Algebra I and one additional mathematics course, English I and English II, American History and Government, and Biology prior to high school graduation unless they have completed course content prior to availability of the operational EOC assessment for that course. • The graduating class of 2013 will be the first complete cohort of students that will have the opportunity to take the full complement of EOC exams (Algebra I and one additional mathematics EOC; English I and English II; Biology and one additional science EOC; American History and Government) prior to high school graduation.

  8. What happens if a student transfers in from out of state and has already completed one or more of the EOC courses? • The student would only be required to take EOC exams for courses he/she takes while in a Missouri school. Remember, when a student is enrolled in a course with appropriate course content, they are required to participate in the test.

  9. Could you please offer a clarification regarding the challenge of self-contained SPED students completing 8 EOC assessments before their high school graduation? • IEP teams will determine if a student on an IEP will participate in the additional EOC assessments. All students must participate in Algebra I, Biology and English II. • However, on additional tests the IEP team can decide to exempt an student on an IEP if it is appropriate.

  10. Has DESE explored the issue of how districts will track the number of EOC exams students have completed in order to assure graduates will have taken all eight assessments? • The data and accountability groups are exploring options currently. • 4-year planning forms

  11. How do students who take more than two EOC courses help our scores? • As the phase II tests become operational, DESE will incorporate the additional EOC testing into the APR. Districts will be able to receive bonus points for these additional courses.

  12. What are the consequences, both for the student and the high school, if a student does not complete all eight exams? • Student • Lack of record • School District • LND

  13. Are the EOC test available on computer? • Yes, students can participate in the EOC test online. Districts have the option of selecting to test using paper forms or by computer.

  14. How and when will we receive scores for the EOC test to use for our grades? • Districts will receive the raw scores for the multiple choice test items within 5 business days from the time Riverside receives the testing materials. Additionally, they will be able to access digital images of the performance events within 5 business days for scoring purposes.

  15. Do we have to grade our own performance events? If so, is there training? • It is a district decision as to whether you have to score the performance event. There is a training module online that teachers will be able to go through to learn how to apply the scoring guide to the student papers.

  16. Is the outline available for Algebra I and Biology that shows what percentage of the questions are from which CLE? • Yes, there is a test specification and blueprint available for each EOC test. However, it does not identify the percentage by CLE. The blueprint provides the percentage by strands.

  17. Test Specifications Each student being tested will take: • Session I: 47 selected-response items (12 items are field test items) • Session II: 2 performance tasks (1 of the performance events is a field test item)

  18. Operational Algebra I Blueprint

  19. Operational Biology Blueprint

  20. Algebra I Manipulatives • Students can use a calculator during both Session I and Session II. A minimum four-function calculator is sufficient for the needs of this assessment. • The testing materials include an Algebra I reference sheet for use during both Session I and Session II.

  21. Biologymanipulatives • Straight edge • Calculators may not be used during either session

  22. Mathematics EOC Tests Phase II Algebra II Geometry Integrated Math IIIntegrated Math III

  23. Operational Algebra II Blueprint

  24. Operational Geometry Blueprint

  25. Algebra I EOC Resources • Reference Sheet • CLE’s • Algebra I Item Cards by strand

  26. Algebra I Item Cards by Strand Multiple Choice items only. The PE will be from the Algebraic Relationship strand.

  27. Biology Resources • CLEs • Biology Item Cards • Secondary Performance Event Template • Errors and Exemplary Response Document

  28. Joyce Penland • Science Regional Instructional Facilitator • jpenland@semo.edu • Julie Antill • Math Regional Instructional Facilitator • jantill@semo.edu
