Leveraging IEM power to implement vendor specific license management. How IBM contributes to and leverages ISO based software asset management standardization Tomasz Zeller ILMT/SUA Development Manager Tomasz.Zeller@pl.ibm.com
Leveraging IEM power to implement vendor specific license management. Extended Oracle Discovery as an example of using IEM OOTB powerful fixlets mechanism The same mechanism can be used for any specific licensing features for other vendors on the top of SUA platform. Look at product doc Consider IBM Services or SAM Business Partners
How IBM contributes to and leverages ISO based software asset managementISO/IEC 19770-2 The software identification (SWID) tag is a standardized data structure containing authoritative identification and management information about a software product. 2014 revision published under ISO web site with IBM contribution & adoption in IBM Software Group productshttp://standards.iso.org/iso/19770/-2/2014-CD1/schema.xsd All new versions of IBM products should produce ISO/IEC 19770-2 tags for software discovery – tracked by central IBM Product readiness team ISO/IEC 19770-2 tags: OOTB reported for IBM software in SUA/ILMT For other vendors discovered and after some manual configuration showing in software inventory report.
Going further: Standardizing SLM Usage Tagging Now tracked as ISO 19770-4 (Resource Usage Metering tags) IBM Software License Metric format as a basis for 19770-4 standard – IBM as editor IBM New Work Item Proposal (NWIP) for 19770-4, ballot passed (April 2015) Expect standard to be published in 2016 What is it XML based log format for an application to record consumed metrics in a timely fashion Central IBM Readiness Team is starting to execute license use reporting based on 19770-4 proposal across IBM Software Products Todays demo shows consumption of example tags
Discovery of Oracle extended inventory in SUA 9.x Boguslaw Nowak ILMT/SUA 9.x Release Manager Boguslaw.Nowak@pl.ibm.com
Discovery of Oracle extended inventory in SUA 9.x In Beta, available in few days, Oracle extended inventory is by default enabled in SUA server after the installation In the next GA, the feature will be disabled, in production this code by default is inactive. It can be intentionally enabled 9.2.next GA
Discovery of Oracle extended inventory in SUA 9.x 3 steps to get Oracle extended inventory Deliver Oracle script to endpoints hosting Oracle databases Enable discovery with ‘Get Oracle Features (BETA)’fixlet Review Oracle Report in SUA
Reporting non-PVU license metrics with SLM tags Boguslaw Nowak ILMT/SUA 9.x Release Manager Boguslaw.Nowak@pl.ibm.com
Reporting non-PVU license metrics with SLM tags In Beta, available in few days, SLM tags reporting is by default enabled in SUA server after the installation In the next GA, the feature will be disabled, in production this code by default is inactive. It can be intentionally enabled 9.2.next GA
Reporting non-PVU license metrics with SLM tags 2 steps to non-PVU license metrics reporting Enable discovery with ‚(BETA) Scan for software license metric tag files’ option of a standard ‘Initiate Sofware Scan’fixlet Review ‚License Use Data’ Report in SUA
Discovery of Oracle extended inventory in SUA 9.x In Beta, available in few days, Oracle extended inventory is by default enabled in SUA server after the installation, so you have it out of the box. In the next GA version of SUA, this feature, still in beta version, will be disabled, so in production this code by default is inactive. Howeverit can be intentionally enabled with a configuration panel available through a special, dedicated URL: https://[SUA_SRV_IP]:9081/management/beta_feature On the infrastructure side, to instrument extended Oracle inventory Oracle script ‘option_usage.sql’ must be delivered to appropriate locations on endpoints hosting Oracle databases: ‘/var/opt/BESClient/LMT/ORACLE’on Linux‘c:\Program Files (x86)\BigFix Enterprise\BES Client\LMT\ORACLE\’ on Windows And finally, you need to execute a fixlet‘Get Oracle Features (BETA)’ action against all endpoints you want to monitor for Oracle editions and features.
Reporting non-PVU license metrics with SLM tags In Beta, available in few days, reporting of non-PVU license metrics is by default enabled in SUA server after the installation, so you have it out of the box. In the next GA version of SUA, this feature, still in beta version, will be disabled, so in production this code by default is inactive. Howeverit can be intentionally enabled with a configuration panel available through a special, dedicated URL: https://[SUA_SRV_IP]:9081/management/beta_feature On the infrastructure side, enable discovery with ‚(BETA) Scan for software license metric tag files’ option of a standard ‘Initiate Sofware Scan’fixlet
