What are the major organ systems of the body? • Circulatory • Digestive • Endocrine • Integumentary • Muscle • Reproductive • Respiratory • Skeletal • Urinary/Excretory • Nervous
What is the nervous system? • It is the coordinator of all voluntary and involuntary actions and senses of the body. • Movement, breathing, vision, touch, taste… Your Body Nervous System
What is the nervous system? • There are 2 parts to the nervous system: Central Nervous System (CNS) Brain Spinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Nerves (Neurons) that connect to the CNS
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) • Connects the limbs and organs to the central nervous system. • Contains 2 major types of neurons: Sensory Neurons Motor Neurons Send signals to the CNS Receives signals from the CNS
Motor Neurons Leads to movement Axon extends through body Controls muscle response Body in CNS
Central Nervous System (CNS) • Spinal cord serves as the relay system for signals from the PNS to reach the brain, (and vice versa). Spinal cord Periphery
The Brain is a processing center • The brain takes in the signals produced by sensory neurons. • The brain processes all signals and responds by sending out impulses to the motor neurons. • The brain controls all of our body functions through the autonomic and somatic nervous systems.
Voluntary vs. Involuntary • The autonomic nervous system regulates the function of our internal organs, working reflexively to keep the body alive and responding to signals we may not even be aware of. • The somatic nervous system regulates voluntary movement and responses to stimuli.
What is the nervous system? • The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord, which take in signals and process them to turn them into messages to control the functions of the body. • 2 major members of the PNS are sensory and motor neurons which take in signals and respond to signals, respectively. • The nervous system has systems to control both voluntary (somatic) and involuntary (autonomic) responses in the body.
