  2. 01 JASENG Jaseng Hospital of Korean Eastern Medicine Jaseng’s Non-surgical Treatment The New Approach to Pain Relief Today’s potent combination of increasing costs in healthcare and a growing demand for alternative treatments is causing a major shift in the medical world’s approach to pain relief. Western doctors are beginning to recognize the age-old methods of their Eastern counterparts and the boundaries of conventional Western know-ledge are being expanded to include these practices. Many of the world’s leading hospitals are now integrating techniques from Eastern medicine, such as acupuncture, into their treatments and thus providing a viable alternative to surgery and pharmaceutical drugs. Patients and medical professionals the world over are fast appreciating the benefits of these non-invasive and often less expensive treatments that have successfully treated and cured patients in Asia for generations. 3. 02 Dr Joon-shik Shin, Ph.D. The Pioneer of Korean Eastern Medicine At the forefront of this advance in integrative medicine is Dr Joon-shik Shin, Korea’s leading doctor of Eastern medicine and founder of Jaseng Hospital of Korean Eastern Medicine, the most advanced hospital for integrative medicine and spinal treatment in the world. His treatment combines Chinese, Japanese and Western Chiropractic methods with cutting edge technology, acupuncture and herbal medicines, and through this method, his cure rate is 95% for patients afflicted with spinal disorders. Dr Shin has been combining the best practices of Eastern and Western medicine for years, and with his remarkable success rate, alleviating the pain of millions of patients, among them some of Korea’s leading figures and top athletes. Dr Shin comes from a long line of Eastern medicine doctors and is the recipient of generations worth of knowledge and medical expertise. As a child in 1960s rural Korea he witnessed his father cure countless patients through Eastern medicine and was determined to follow in his footsteps. From an early age Dr Shin studied hard to become a doctor. As a child he memorized the components of his father’s herbal remedies and was even practicing acupuncture as a teenager. These medical skills were soon to face their most difficult test. Dr Shin’s father was paralyzed by a fall down the stairs; he was in turmoil as he saw his father in such a debilitated state. A misdiagnosis led to further complications and the senior Dr Shin slipped into a coma. His Western doctors gave up on him, but the young Dr. Shin, already highly knowledgeable in Eastern medical practices, was determined to cure his father. Using a combination of herbal medicines and acupuncture he saved his father’s life. Since then Dr Shin has dedicated his life to the treatment and diagnosis of spinal injuries. Over the years he has developed a unique method, which combines eastern and western practices with the most advanced technology, to alleviate spinal and joint pain. Dr Shin is now a world-renowned expert in non-surgical treatment for spinal disorders with patients from all over the globe. His unique brand of integrative medicine has sparked the interest of medical institutions around the world and Dr Shin is in constant demand to give lectures on his treatments. He has received invitations from some of the most prestigious hospitals and specialists in the world, among them the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Al-Azhar University Medical School in Egypt and the University of California’s Irvine Medical Center. Dr Shin is working with these and other major medical institutions to expand upon his methods and treatments. Click here to meet Dr Shin

  4. 03 Jaseng’s Integrative Treatment Including Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Chuna Therapy A major component of the treatment at Jaseng is an ancient Chinese therapy known as Chuna Manipulation, which Dr Shin discovered while researching ways to cure his father. It derives from the Chinese words ‘chu’ (push) and ‘na’ (pull), and is a non-surgical therapy that directly manipulates crooked or misaligned joints and knotted muscles to relieve pain. Dr Shin has spent years perfecting his unique combination of Chuna Therapy with herbal medicines and acupuncture. He has even developed his own anti-inflammatory agent -Shinbarometin- which has acquired a patent in both the USA and Korea. Shinbarometin was proved an effective anti-inflammatory agent as well as an aid in bone regeneration and nerve restoration in a research study by the Natural Products Research Institute of Seoul National University. Dr Shin is constantly developing and researching new ways to alleviate pain and correct spinal injuries without surgery and the use of painkillers. He has conducted research with the Harvard Medical School, the University of North Carolina, and the University of California among others. One of the most successful treatments that Dr Shin has developed is MSAT (motion style acupuncture treatment), which has had extraordinary results. After laborious research Dr Shin discovered that by simultaneously stimulating the acupuncture points and moving the patient’s body he could treat acute musculoskeletal dysfunctions. 5. 04 Harry’s Story An American Low Back-Pain Patient Cured by Jaseng’s Treatment Harry McNamara, one of Dr Shin’s patients in the United States, was told by neurosurgeons that he would never be able to walk again without pain. “They told me there’s nothing else I can do for you, you’re just going to have to live with the pain.” But Harry, who works in the medical profession and had heard of Dr Shin’s successes, was determined not to give up or become reliant on pain-killers. He went to Dr Shin’s Jaseng clinic in Los Angeles and was treated with MSAT and was able to quickly walk pain-free. “People call it magic. People call it a miracle. Whatever it is it works.” There is, however, solid science behind Dr Shin’s treatments. His methods have been analyzed and proven effective by the Osher Institute at Harvard Medical School and his success acknowledged in several of the top medical journals around the world. The Philosophy Combining the Best of Korean Eastern and Western Medicine Korean Eastern Medicine is based on the belief that illness comes from physiological disharmony within the body, meaning that one’s yin and yang are out of balance. The body then becomes weak and cannot fight off germs. Korean medicine focuses on strengthening our weakened vitality, enhancing the so-called ‘Jaseng’ - our self-healing ability. Dr Shin analyses the root cause of the pain and helps the body to heal as a whole. He encourages his patients to examine their overall life-style and to make improvements – to eat more healthily, exercise regularly, try to remove stress etc (advice his Western counterparts would also prescribe.) By restoring the body’s ability to heal itself, the Chuna Manipulation techniques and other treatments are more effective in the long term. Muscles and ligaments are strengthened and inflammation is reduced so that the repaired spine remains strong and healthy. These techniques are modernized versions of methods that have been used in China and other Asian countries for centuries. In the East over a billion people still subscribe to the success of this form of medicine and philosophy. Through the development and globalization of integrative medicine, the rest of the medical world can now explore these tried and tested formulas for pain relief. 6. 05 Korean Eastern Doctor’s Education A Ten-Year Process to Become a K.E.M.D. Dr Shin and the doctors at Jaseng undergo a rigorous medical training process that is as strenuous as that of Western doctors. All the doctors on the Jaseng medical team will have studied at the most prestigious college of Eastern medicine for six years, interned for one year, and then completed a three-year residency. It takes ten years to qualify to be a Korean Eastern Medicine doctor. Dr Shin himself received his Korean Eastern Medical Degree at Kyung-hee University in Seoul, one of the most respected Universities of Eastern medicine in the world. Introducing Jaseng Hospital of Korean Eastern Medicine Integrative Medicine Specializing in the Treatment of Spine and Joint Conditions Jaseng is the largest Eastern medicine hospital specializing in the treatment of spinal diseas-es in Asia, with thirteen branches in South Korea, and two in the United States (California). 7. 06 Jaseng Goes Global International Exchange Programs, Lectures and Medical Volunteer Work Jaseng’s brand of modern Korean medicine is now attracting global attention. Western doctors are recognizing that it provides a viable and proven alternative to surgery and pharmaceutical drugs and Dr Shin has been invited to give lectures on his unique brand of integrative medicine at some of the world’s prestigious hospitals. In February 2011 he gave a lecture on non-surgical spine treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. This lecture spurred Dr Kropf, a leading orthopedic surgeon at Cedars-Sinai, to visit the Jaseng Hospital in Seoul. Dr Kropf said during his visit to Jaseng hospital he was, “deeply impressed by Dr Shin’s achievement of having created optimal treatments for patients with spine and disc conditions by integrating traditional Eastern Korean with conventional Western techniques.” Dr Kropf went on to say that he would like to work with Dr Shin and they are preparing to do a joint research project to further develop and integrate the best techniques that Cedars-Sinai and Jaseng has to offer. Dr Shin has experienced the same success at hospitals in Russia and Egypt. After he spoke at the Russian State Medical University of Moscow and the Al- Azhar University in Cairo both institutions suggested Dr Shin set up a clinic in their respective countries. It is for this reason that Dr Shin is more inspired than ever to spread his own techniques and share the benefits of integrative medicine between the East and West. To this end Dr Shin has set up several exchange programs with hospitals and universities across the globe. The Jaseng Medical Group is also very actively engaged in medical volunteer work within Korea as well as in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and other countries where they provide free treatments to hundreds of patients.
