Nagasaki Attack • Took place on August 9, 1945 • Targeted due to its Naval and shipyards • Kokura was first target, but cloud cover forced U.S. to choose Nagasaki • Bomb was called Fat Man
Reason for dropping the Bombs • Stop massive loss of American life • To have the Japanese stop fighting • President Truman gave authority to drop the bombs
Surrender of Japan • Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945 • Signed formal papers on USS Missouri • Atomic Bomb and Soviet Union caused Japan to surrender
