Genre • Play • The Diary of Anne Frank is a play based on Anne’s writings.
Playwright • A person who writes plays • Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, and Wendy Kesselman are playwrights.
Theatre • A building with a stage where plays are performed. • Wicked is being performed at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts theatre.
Stage • The raised floor in a theatre where actors perform.
Actor • A person who performs in a play or movie. • Vin Diesel is a famous Hollywood actor.
Actress • a female actor • Angelina Jolie is a beautiful actress.
Act • (verb) To perform as a character in an play or movie. • She acted in her first play when she was in high school. • (noun) One of the main parts of a play. • Hamlet kills the king in Act 5.
Scene • A part of a play or movie during which the action all happens in one place over a short period of time. • She appears in Act 2, Scene 3, a love scene.
Part • The words and actions of a particular character in a play or movie, performed by an actor. • Who will play the part of Mr. Frank?
Setting • The time and place of the action in a story or play. • The “Secret Annex” is the setting of The Diary of Anne Frank.
Script • The written form of a speech, play, or movie. It has dialogues and stage directions.
Dialogue • The words the actors speak.
Stage Directions • The words in parentheses in the script. They tell how the actors should look, move, and speak. They help you visualize the action, characters, and surroundings. • (quickly he motions her to be quiet.) • (looking down at the basked
Props • Short for “properties”. Objects that appear on stage during a play, such as pictures or furniture.
ACTIVITY Be prepared to share with the class: • Discuss with your partner a play you have seen. • What was it about? • Did you like it? • Have you ever acted in a play?
ACTIVITY • Visualizing means using stage directions to help you “picture” the action, the characters, and the setting. • Working with your partner, copy these stage directions and underline the descriptive words that help you visualize. • (She looks down the steps where Peter van Daan, a shy, awkward boy of sixteen, wearing a heavy coat with the conspicuous yellow star, waits nervously. HISTORICAL CONTEXT • Being familiar with the history behind a story can help you better understand what is happening in the character’s world.
Why did Anne Frank’s family go into hiding? • They were Jews • The Nazis hated Jews • The Nazis blamed the Jews for Germany’s problems following World War I • Adolph Hitler wanted to develop a “Master (German) Race” which included overtaking neighboring countries and eliminating Jews and other “undesirable” people. • Jews were captured and sent to concentration camps where many were murdered (over 6 million Jews plus 5 million others).
