  2. Target • The Catholic church was key in the political development of Western Europe • Know who Charlemagne and the Franks are • Understand the complexity of the idea of Convivencia

Western Europe after fall of Rome • Who: Germanic tribes + Romans = Franks • Where: Gaul (France), Italy, Austria, Saxony • Iberia under Caliphates Rule • De-Urbanization of fallen Western Rome • Religious Movements • Some cultures revert to paganism • Most will start to convert to Roman Catholicism

  5. Merovingian Dynasty • 486 C.E. – Frankish King Clovis conquers Gaul (France) • Converts to Christianity • Means of securing power • Backing for throne from Christian elites • Unifies Frankish people • Solidifies Frankish connection to Rome • “Protectors of faith”

Carolingian Dynasty Charles Martel (686-741) • Who: Frankish King reuniting ppl after fall of Merovingian's • What did he do: • Church and state intertwined • Christianity used to unite people • Worried about “Moorish” (Muslims) threat: $ from church goes to state battles • BATTLE OF TOURS • 732 C.E. – Andalusian(Al-Andalus) Army and Frankish Army meet • Stop Al-Andalus expanding into Gaul(France)

Carolingian Dynasty Charlemagne • Who: Frankish King at the height of Carolingian dynasty • What did he do: • Reform • Inspired Carolingian Renaissance • Valued Education • Social reforms • Encouraged spread of Christianity • Political Reforms • Divides empire into counties, ruled by Counts  develops into feudalism • Becomes Holy Roman Emperor • Helps out the Pope in Italy and the Pope gives him more legitimacy by giving him this title

  8. After Charlemagne •  814 C.E. – Charlemagne dies & his successors inept and empire falls to chaos • Start of Feudalism and lords having more power in Western Europe • Caliphates don’t push too much into Gaul anymore – not worth the trouble & they have their own instability

Pg 43 Convivencia • Theory of Convivencia: • The close proximity or “Coexistence” of multiple groups lead to cultural interaction, the exchange of ideas and customs, and participation within the same cultural environment • Use HW readings • Regulations for non Muslims • Ornament of the World • Organize evidence into “Coexsistence (Convivencia)” and “Segregation (No Convivencia)” T-Chart on pg 43
