  4. An Inventory:What David Knew…. • He had been anointed… as what?? • God’s spirit was with him?? • He had power (he killed a bear and a lion) • God was the source of his strength • This Philistine army should not be slighting his God! • No one was stepping up to solve the problem

  5. An Inventory:What David Did Not Know…. • Why he had been anointed • What this commission meant • Would the army stand up with him? • Was he being foolhardy? • Whether the rock would work? Dan. 3:18 • He would become a great king • He would the forefather of Jesus

  7. An Inventory of Today’s World • The world is in shambles • Idolatry is rampant: • False gods and religions • Obeying the pleasures of the flesh (Col. 3:5) • “Christianity” is tainted beyond recognition • Mental illness and depression, drug abuse • Society has lost its work ethic • Is there a “light???” • 5 Thoughts to cope with our problems

  8. #1 Recognize the Commission • David didn’t know how extensive his purpose was • He saw a need and he stepped up • We no doubt see many needs today • Things need to change… and one person can cause change • Cumulative effect leads to great change

  9. #2 Clarify Your Motives • 17:26, 36, 46 all help us to see why David was doing what he did • David was accused of having wrong motives • Consider Jeremiah in Jer. 28:11. He didn’t allow his pride lead him to arguing • Are we hoping for popularity, prosperity or martyrdom? • Reflect on this subject frequently

  10. #3 Review Your Position • Be sure our battle is the Lord’s battle • Helps us realize where our responsibility ends

  11. Review Your Position • Be sure our battle is the Lord’s battle • Helps us realize where our responsibility ends • Not a way out or an excuse • We don’t have to see the lab report • Reflect on the source of our trouble • Did I cause it? • Did it just happen? • Is there a solution within my control • Do you know? • Regular prayer (I Thess. 5:17)

  12. #4 Engage the Battle and the War • Notice there were plenty of warriors • For days no one would step out, waiting for what??? • One small boy…. • What about our army?

  13. #4 Start With Simple Obedience • David started by delivering roasted grain, loaves and cheese • A lifetime of small things… incremental changes (17:17) • We do what needs doing, and God will lead us to more things (Matt. 25:23)

  14. The Beginning of Obedience • Hear and Believe Christ (Rom. 10) • Repent (Acts 2:38) • Die to our old selves and be buried in baptism • Arise to walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:3-4)
