Goals • Utilizing multidisciplinary simulation training for OPO and medical staff (physicians and RNs) to facilitate end of life meetings is an effective tool for improving family care, effective requests and OPO/unit staff relationships • Execute effective simulation trainings in the hospital setting • Anticipate and address obstacles to implementing end-of-life simulation training in collaboration with hospital staff

  5. Education Options • On line training • Lectures • Real time/just in time education • Other EOL consultant trainings for OPO • Simulation

  6. Simulation Objectives: • Enhance hospital staff and organ procurement organization (OPO) EOL skills in discussing the options with families whose loved ones have been declared brain dead • Discuss brain death with families in an adequate manner • Make a plan with OPO to discuss the specific process of organ donation after brain death

  7. Simulation Encounter • 20 minute overview (all teams oriented to day) • 2-3 groups (lecture included) • 5 minute huddle with OPO (Huddle simulation) • 20 minute family meeting with standardized patients (actors) • 20 minute debrief • 20 minute replay of family meeting so staff can correct issues during initial family encounter • 15 minute final debrief

  14. Follow Up • All videos are viewed by OPO to improve internal processes • Learners complete evaluation • Learners are offered opportunity to repeat SIM up to 4 times in 1 year period
