Introduction to the projectAREA-WIDE INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT OF FRUIT FLIES IN SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN COUNTRIES Prabhat Kumar, Coordinator & IPM Expert Agriculture Systems & Engineering FOS School of Environment, Resources and Development Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand
Outline • Fruit flies in Asia • Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) • Melon Fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae) • Rational of project • Opportunity for the project • Project partnership • Funding source • Objective • Activities • Expected outputs • Achievement so far (Inception Period) • Inception Workshop & its objectives
Fruit flies in Asia • Bactrocera genus of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) are highly destructive quarantine pest of tree fruits and vegetables. • Asiatic origin and widely distributed • Current management relies on chemicals, bagging, and recently use of MAT
Oriental Fruit Fly, Bactrocera dorsalis • B. dorsalisforms part of a species complex, within which over 50 species have been described in Asia. • Taxonomy still evolving • Fruit crops shows sign of oviposition • Losses in quality and quantity • Present in all project countries and beyond
Melon Fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae • Gourds and melons are common host • Fruit stage shows sign of oviposition & oozing • Losses in quality and quantity • Present in all project countries and beyond
Rational of project? • Horticulture produce are main traded agricultural goods • In 2004, Asian countries produced 178 million tones of tropical fruits which amounted to 66% of the total global production and earned 2.5 billion US$ • Asian region (East, Southeast, and South) is among the top three regions—for both exporters and importers of fruits and vegetables in the world • Rapidly growing FTAs in the region • Tephritid fruit flies (Bactroceradorsalis& Bactrocera cucurbitae) cause direct damage to fruits and vegetables leading to 90-100% losses depending on locality, variety and season Dr. Prabhat Kumar, ASE, AIT
Rational of project? • Serious losses in trade value and opportunity due to strict quarantine regulations imposed by most importing countries • Dominated by smallholder producers & lack of ecological options for FF management • Lack of bio-physical & socio-economically adapted technologies
Opportunity for project • Development of science-based assembly of IPM practices for varied socio-economic and bio-physical condition in the region • Building from national to a regional effort towards sustainable FF management • Mainstreaming FF management into the national extension system • Developing training module, design and content for FFS • Farmer’s education using learning centered approaches for lasting impact
Funding source • Taiwan ICDF (www.icdf.org.tw) through Global Horticulture Initiative (GHI; http://www.globalhort.org/) Value : 250,000 US$ Duration : 2 years
Objectives • To develop effective, profitable and environmental-friendly management of fruit flies by and for smallholder fruit and vegetable farmers in four Mekong basin countries
Activities • Surveys, GIS mapping • Participatory action research & basic research on finding ecologically sound management options • Training of trainers to train IPM trainers • Curriculum Development Workshops • Pilot Farmer’s field school • Farmer’s field day • National and regional workshops • Extension brochures, Webpage and association
Expected outputs – a snapshot • Locally adapted IPM technologies for each bio-physical and socio-economic areas • Trained trainers on FF IPM • Innovation in FFS curricula • Farmers education using FFS approach • Development of extension materials • Establishment of regional network on FF IPM • Policy and phytosanitary laws harmonization attempts with partnership of other local and regional agencies • Knowledge dissemination and management on fruit flies
Progress so far • Development of working platforms • GIS survey data format • Some data were received (Cambodia and Laos) – needs more discussion • Beta version of IPM Website available for comments • Country strategy paper development • Inception workshop
