Progress Report: Alloy Ta-W Behavior in High VacuumNovember 28, 2012 N. Jacobson, J. Horwath, D. Humphrey* NASA Glenn Research Center *ZIN Technologies/NASA GRC Group This is the 9/24/12 report with SEM of Ta-W after exposure with getter
Procedure • Same as described in August 27, 2012 progress report • 1 x 1 cm samples as provided by UCB/SSL • UCB/SSL heating schedule • Samples run without getter and with Zr getter at the bottom of the furnace
Images after Exposure without Getter Secondary Electron Image Backscattered Electron Image
Images after Exposure with Getter Secondary Electron Images—no dramatic grain boundary etching
Conclusions • 1 x 1 cm Ta-W coupons tested without and with Zr getter • Samples without Zr getter show extensive grain boundary attack • Getter appears to make significant difference in regard to weight change and shows limited, if any, grain boundary attack
