  2. About Dump & Run • Dump & Run, Inc. is a source reduction program. • Dump & Run collects reusable material left by students as they vacate their college residences. • Collected goods are sold at recycle sales or donated. • Funds from the sales go to benefit designated causes.

  5. Dump & Run Goals • The goals: • Source reduction in solid waste and redistribution of reusable materials. • Increased awareness by college students, administrators, and the public of solid waste issues. • Raise funds for worthy nonprofit causes in a tightening market

Dump & Run Objectives • Objective #1: 25% reduction in solid waste at participating schools. • June 2000: The University of Richmond decreased residential trash during moveout by 50% • In 2002: Approximately 100 tons of material diverted from college campuses and sold at reuse s • By 2008: Reported typical diversion rate from many schools of between 3 to 5 tons, in some cases 20 to 40!

  7. Dump & Run Objectives • Objective #2: Fundraising for worthy causes. • Year 2000: $6000 raised • Year 2001: $17,000 raised • Year 2002:$40,000 raised • Year 2008: $67,000

Dump & Run Objectives • Objective #3: increased awareness about solid waste issues • The average North American college student throws out an average of 640 pounds of garbage a year (source: Affluenza) • A survey conducted by Dump & Run in 2002 of facility professionals estimated that 30% of this is during move-out periods.

  11. Before you begin… • Issues to consider: Number of volunteers Amount of available time Level of funding and resources • Before you begin, ask: How can I get resources or supplies that I need for this project?

  13. Logistics and Schedule • Timeline: • Collection design • Site selection • Publicizing the collection • Collecting donations • Transporting donations • Storing goods • Sorting & Pricing goods • Advertising the sale • Sale specifics: Raffles? Band? • Running the sale • Donation of leftovers

  14. Collection, Storage & Trucks TARGET SOURCES THAT ARE INTERESTED IN YOUR CAUSE Do your homework. Ask volunteers. Look locally first.

  16. Getting volunteers • Start with the end in mind... look at your organization's big picture.Who are you? What are your strengths and priorities?

  17. Getting Volunteers:Where to go? Potential collaborators for move-out projects are everywhere: • Retirement organizations • Environmental groups • Local thrift stores • Service organizations • Corporate volunteer partnerships • Nonprofit educational programs & charities • High school clubs and PTA groups • Civic groups • Local church and children’s advocacy groups • Local college clubs • Probation office community service programs

  18. Getting Volunteers to show up:“Show me the money” • Unpaid can mean unreliable • Volunteers can be motivated by money to their cause

  19. Coordinating the sale: plan it! • Issues to consider: # of Volunteer groups Publicity & site visibility Fall or Spring sale Storage and sale site • Ask: How can we minimize costs? How can we minimize waste? Don’t let your collection site look like this one!

Coordinating the sale:Sorting and pricing • Organize Volunteer shifts. • If your storage facility is small, sort as you collect and box according to categories. • Tie laces of shoes together to keep in pairs • Price high demand items (small refrigerators) higher than low demand items (computers)
