In those times, speech was called rhetoric, mainly because only those that could afford to be educated were, so much of the society was spoken to.
3. More In very early times, 700 B.C. people had to know how to speak well because citizens ran the country and at any given time they could be called upon to speak to the public. They might be called to court which they would have to “address” a large gathering of people, or they might be called to speak as a diplomat. Either way knowing how to speak and how to speak well was essential.
4. Types of Public Speaking Dyadic Communication- 2 people (conversation)
Small Group- no more than 5 (business meeting)
Mass Communication- some one talks but those listening are not always in front of the speaker (radio broadcast, TV)
Public Speaking- a speaker delivers a specific message with a specific purpose. Always includes a speaker, an audience who is listening, and a message that is meant to accomplish something specific.
5. Types of Speeches Informative- You teach your audience something new
Persuasive- You try to change the audiences’ attitude or behaviors
Entertaining-You want the listeners to be interested or amused

Situation: consider the time and place of where you are giving the speech.
Purpose: this refers to the goal the speaker hopes to achieve with his or her speech.
Audience: consider the people to whom the speech is directed.
Method: which methods will best accomplish the purpose.
7. Formats of Delivery Impromptu - The type of delivery given with little or no preparation
Extemporaneous - The type of delivery where you gradually look at note cards, paper, or screen for key points to stay on task during a speech?
Manuscript - The type of delivery where the speaker reads word for word from a script or screen?
Memorized - The type of delivery where the speaker remembers word for word what he/she is going to say without looking at a script or screen?

Fear of dying The reason most people get anxious when required to speak to a group is that they are afraid of looking foolish or stupid in front of many of their peers and important people. They are afraid that their mind will go blank or that their lack of speaking skills will lower the opinion others have of them.
Being humiliated can destroy a person's ego and confidence.
