Unit Components Overview • Describe key skills and strategies • Rationale for clustering standards • Explains the strategic timing of the unit • Gives teachers the big idea
Unit Components Vocabulary Tiers • Tier 2 Academic Vocabulary • useful across all content areas • e.g. Argument, relevant • Tier 3 Domain or discipline specific • e.g. affixes, language conventions
Unit Components Common Core Standards • Each unit includes • focus standards • Drives the instruction and the assessment • Support standards • Clustered with focus standards (often writing or speaking/listening standards) • Recurring standards • Taught in each unit (vocabulary, grammar) • End of year goals
Unit Components Enduring Understandings and Essential Questions • Enduring Understanding: • Why do we want students to know this 10 years from now? • It answers the “why should I care” question. • Essential Questions • If student can answer these questions, they show understanding of the skill
