Science, UCONN • Minor in Marine Science • 13 yrs at Har-Bur • Certified in: SCUBA, SCUBA rescue, Life saving, CPR/AED, First Aid, Instructor of some of the above mentioned • Peter Bogen • BA Clark University • MA CAS Fairfield University • 14 yrs in Region #10; 29.5 years in education. • Has been on this trip with two different schools, a total of five trips. • Certified in: CPR/AED, First Aid • Has taken a lifeguard course – high school!

About Bermuda • Bermuda is the most northerly group of coral islands in the world. • Bermuda is a British territory, approximately 21 square miles in size. • Bermuda has a warm and humid climate, windy especially in the winter months. 70 in April – water about 65. • Bermuda is located 580 miles directly east of North Carolina. • The main island is covered with low green hills, and surrounded by over 120 small and 6 medium coral islands.
The Experience • Immersion in the ecology of Bermuda • Reef/coastal habitats • Marine life • Island geology • Terrestrial plants & animals • Lectures • Nature preserves, scientific institutions
Trip Requirements • Five pre-trip preparation sessions • 2 Pool sessions (scuba / snorkeling class) • March 8 and 22 • Completed notebook! • Follow-up meeting to share and discuss trip experiences, and to make curricular connections
How Students Will Be Selected • Complete paperwork, including typed essay • Explain why you would be a good choice for this trip • Two recommendations from Har-Bur staff • History of positive behaviors • Demonstrates appropriate behavior up to the trip departure • Ability to work independently, and in a group • Has shown an interest in science in previous grades
What is due by October 1 • Application Form • Essay – why should I be chosen to go on this trip? • Permission form • Letters of recommendation (2) • Contract • Photo release form • Phone Chain information form • Medical Consent / Authorization form • Medical release/ treatment form • BIOS Contract • BIOS Drug –free zone form • BIOS Snorkel Waiver Form • Check for $700. Made payable to HBMS. • Not required for now but as soon as possible • Permission for scuba classes • Attached as the last page and needed as soon as possible is any prescription med information and the doctors authorization. Pre-trip Expectations • Students must attend all after school sessions • Students should try to attend all fundrasing • Student must take part in both scuba/snorkel classes –March 8 and 22 • from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. • Student continues to demonstrate positive behaviors up to trip departure • Student must maintain C’s in all classes • Students must maintain good conduct record
Trip Cost$2100.00 • Transportation to/from airport • Airfare to/from Bermuda • Transportation while on island • 6 days/5 nights room and board at BIOS • Admission to attractions; Nature Preserve, Underwater Exploration Institute • Lectures and labs (supplies, BIOS usage) • Trip Insurance • Additional costs for dive gear, wetsuits, snorkel classes, souvenirs and passports

Bermuda Timeline • Due date for applications – 10/1/14 • Due date for first payment - $700 – 10/1/14 • Applebee’s first breakfast – 11/2/14 • Due date for second payment - $700 – 11/29/14 • Passport copies due to Bogen – January 2, 2015 • Dates for in school group lunch work – TBA – starting in January • Third and final payment due - $600 – 2/1/15 • Final physical information due – allergies, asthma, meds… - 2/1/15 • Applebees second breakfast 2/22/15 • Dates for Snorkel classes at the YMCA in Torrington 3/8/15 and 3/22/15 • Leave for Bermuda from HBMS by bus 4/20/15 – 5:00 am • Research project due for presentation 4/24/15 ( in Bermuda!) • Return home 4/25/15 approximately 8 p.m. • Notebooks due – 4/30/15 but can give to me on flight home if done.
