What is a surd? • A surd is a square root that cannot be decomposed into one whole number. For example: • As you can see we can solve this square root by using the calculator but the result is not exact. This is the reason why we leave it as a square root in other words a surd.
Basic rules for surds • If we have a square root were two numbers are inside we can separate or simplify the expression by putting them into two separate square roots. Note that the answer is the same.
Basic rules for surds • Every time you multiply a surd (number in a square root) by itself the result is going to be the same number but without the expression.
How do we use surds? • Example one: • Using the basic rule of surds we can simplify the square root of 12. As this number has no exact square root we can do it by simplifying • This is the simplified way to put the square root of 12 by using surds.
