THE FLAG OF THE USA • The flag of the USA is called “the stars and stripes”. • There are 50 white stars (each one represents one state) and 13 stripes (each one represents the original 13 states founded by the colonists)
HISTORY • Dutch colonists bought this area from Native Americans(Indians) and called it “New Amsterdam”. • British arrived and took possession of it. They changed the name and called the city “New York”. • The city is divided into 5 boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island.

ELLIS ISLAND AND THE STATUE OF LIBERTY • In the past 12 millionimmigrantsarrived in New York by ship. The shipsstoppedat the immigration centre on Ellis Island where the immigrantswerechecked. Thisislandisnow a museum and a popularplace reminding New Yorkerstheir origins.
The first thingimmigrants sawwas the Statue of Liberty, whichstands in New York Harbour. For thisreasonit became a symbol of freedom and opportunity. The Statue of Liberty was made in France and transported to the USA in 1885.
