Unit 3 – Westward Expansion • Standard 6:The student will analyze the impact of territorial expansion and population growth and the impact of this growth in the early decades of the new nation. • Standard 7:Students will explain the process of economic growth, its regional and national impact in the first half of the 19th century, and the different responses to it.

Manifest Destiny • Manifest = Obvious • Destiny = God given right or plan • Manifest Destiny: the belief that God wanted the United States to own all of North America Don’t write this question down • Why do you think people believed God wanted them to expand westward and control all of North America?

  4. Louisiana Purchase • In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from France for $15 million

  5. Doubled the size of the nation • Gave the U.S. control of the Mississippi River • Increased commerce tremendously!!! • Led to the growth of New Orleans

  6. Lewis & Clark explored the area • A Native American named Sacagawea helped them succeed • Their success paved the way for westward expansion

  7. Did we fulfill our Manifest Destiny?
