A brain… You need to have strong knowledge of: • Your subject matter • Pedagogy • Developmental characteristics of your students • The environment in which you teach
Not using your brain… • Focusing solely on yourself—just getting your work done; not operating as a team member; leaving school the second “teacher hours” are over • Inappropriate, unprofessional appearance • Whining and complaining that this is “a lot of work” “I don’t feel good” • Absences and lateness • Not keeping up with grading and planning; not being prepared in any way • Not asking for help/guidance when you need it • Intimate relationships with your cooperating teacher or other faculty/staff in the building
A heart… You need to truly love teaching love seeing students learn. You need to love what you teach You need to genuinely want to be the best teacher you can possibly be
C..C..Courage You need to be strong enough to • Get up each and every day and put forth 110% • Take constructive criticism from your cooperating teacher and/or college supervisor • Admit when you make mistakes • Ask for help • Take risks
Follow the Yellow Brick Road For guidance along the way: • Your cooperating teacher—maintain that relationship no matter what • Other teachers and staff in the building--networking • Your supervisor • Curriculum guides and materials
I’d turn back if I were you…. • You also need to have the brains, courage and heart to know if you reach the point where you are unable to complete the experience.
Are you a good witch or a bad witch? You will encounter both….
How you handle these witches and storms will be critical to your success The longer that I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude is more important than facts. It is more important than past, than education, than money, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or even do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a church, home, or team. The remarkable thing is that we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing that we can do is play on the one thing we have, And that is our Attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me And 90% is how I react to it!” IT’S ALL ABOUT YOUR ATTITUDE
Why do Dispositions/attitude Matter? An email I received from Melanie Snyder, now a former NCC student…. • “I guess Naperville is changing the way they are doing interviews. More specifically, they are looking for someone with character. The questions they ask relate to a persons dispositions. It's a brand new thing they are doing. All the principals had to go to a seminar about interviewing.….She said that the principals in 203 are looking for people that they could teach (mold into the type of teacher that they are looking for). We just have to bring the ’good character.’”
