My Philosophy Take your teaching seriously, But never take yourself, the teacher, too seriously
Creating Games in Your Classroom • Create teams by choosing them yourself or by random method: month of birth, color of eyes, color of hair, roll of a die all work well • Create smaller teams rather than two large teams • When possible, allow students to solve problems in pairs rather than alone, this decreases competitive tension • Avoid situations that make individual students feel stupid, if you know certain students will struggle, build in coaching time during which other team members can help
Creating Games Con’t. • Allow for “think time” by pausing after asking questions, not all students process answers rapidly- you can tell students they must wait to respond until you indicate it is time to answer • When possible, students shouldn’t know the order in which they will be answering questions, they will stay on their toes and will always be ready to answer • If you are calling on students, return to some students who have already answered questions- they won’t lose interest and are more likely to pay attention • Source: 1990 Education Digest Article, “Game-Based Teaching” by John Magney

Sponge/Ball Toss • Divide class into two or more groups • Set up three tape lines and basket • Each line has a different point value-farthest line most points, closest line has lowest value • If the student gets the answer correct, they throw the ball at the basket • Team with the most points wins
Sparkle • Great for spelling and vocabulary • Arrange students in rows • Students are given a word to spell • Each student says one letter • After the letter is spelled correctly the next student says, “Sparkle”- the person behind him/her is out • If a word is misspelled that student is out • The same word continues until spelled correctly • Winner is last person to survive
Silent Ball • Good for vocabulary/spelling • Students sit on desks or stand in a circle • If they talk or throw the ball inappropriately they are out and sit down • Teacher starts game by giving word and tossing ball to student • If the student catches it and gives the correct answer they can toss to another student • The next student after the word is spelled correctly give the definition of the word • Last student left standing wins
